Association for the Blind of Santo Domingo
The National Association for the Blind, Inc. is a non-profit institution founded in November 1964, 58 years ago, as an initiative by Engineer Rafael Aguayo, who, along with compassionate and supportive individuals such as Engineer Tancredo Aybar Castellanos, Dr. José Negrete Tolentino, and others, took on the great responsibility of working for the visually impaired population of the Dominican Republic. This institution is protected under Law 122/05 and was incorporated by Executive Decree No. 2100 – Official Gazette No. 8928, dated February 15, 1965. Our main goal is the functional and professional rehabilitation of the blind and low-vision population, enabling them to be productive members, integrated socially and professionally, as well as to carry out blindness prevention actions, contributing to eye health care and preventing vision loss. The Association provides its services free of charge nationwide, through three centers located in Santo Domingo, Santiago de los Caballeros, and Barahona, with its community programs, South-East, Cibao, and South-West respectively, staffed by highly qualified personnel in the different compensatory techniques used in the rehabilitation of blind and low-vision individuals.
